Exhibition and Theatre In London

I went to the National Theatre to see curious incident of the dog, in the night time and Les Miserables. We had a backstage tour in the theater but I especially enjoyed the background of the play- curious incident of the dog - as it was different to the normal scenery you might see at at theater. Furthermore, the background had bright lights shining through the gaps between the 'brick'. This was quite intriguing as the lights captivated my attention and as the bricks would move and the lights would move too. Furthermore, this was really interesting as it is creative considering that bricks do not move let alone have lights shining at the corner of each brick. The background consists of blue as its' main colour and bricks set in orderly lines; the background emitted light blue, bright lights throughout the course of the play.  On the stage there are boxes filled with memories that would be released during the play. Also there were chairs for the actors to sit on.

The play was based on the future and how a typical home would look like. The background alone brought several emotions. Firstly, the colour blue relates to peace  and dreams but the dark blue colour in the background brings a more negative emotion into the play. This is important as it can change the was the audience views a certain situation. Secondly, the bright colours in between the bricks show hope in the midst of darkness. The side walls of the background are light blue and add more positivity into the play. Thirdly, the moving bricks could relate to the sense that life is always changing and the future would be developed and different. The moving bricks brought a contageous feeling of amazement and hope across the audience because of the peculiarity of the occurrence. Fourthly, the objects on the stage reminded the audience that the scene would have be an ordinary scene in the future because of the familiarity if the objects on stage. Lastly, the ceiling is the colour black which allows the audience to wonder what is above the background and how it would look like. This brings many different possibilities to the structure of the building and consequently allows a viewer to imagine how the building would look like.

Finally, the different emotions inspires me and my work and how I could develop it further. I should include familiar objects in my art work and colours that can distinctively create strong emotions. This could relate to mental imagery because of the memories stuck in a box and hard to release. Furthermore, the background is of the inside of a building and so relates to my main theme in abstract.

I went to an Art Exhibition in London called Robert Rauschenberg. The following pieces are from this art exhibition:

These images are all of different skylines that lack colour and are all in black and white. The images all have buildings, dark clouds and some sort of land. All the images are dark and so have negative emotions . Dark clouds are formed because of bad weather which is obviously not positive. Also, all the buildings are sky scrapers which could symbolised authority power over anything below it- they are quite intimidating.

The clouds on the first row are not as defined or as obvious as the clouds on other rows. The skies are either misty white with a few clouds or grey with a few clouds. The sky is just simple and basic behind the row of buildings. However, on the third image of the first row, the clouds are along side and in front of the buildings which makes the image look as if the clouds are overtaking the city. On the second row of images, the clouds are more obvious  and there are more clouds that can be seen in the midst of the sky. The images all look peaceful and calm as there is a river underneath the buildings but then behind the buildings you can see dark clouds forming. In the first image of the second row, there are two sky scrapers which h hide the colours nicely behind the grey skies. However, in the second and third picture of the second row, there are smaller buildings and so the skies are more visible. The colours are all positioned very closely to one another so the phone almost look as if they are one big cloud. The effect of them all clumped together is that it looks as if a small erruption is occuring. On the first image of the third row, there are obvious clouds again but this time they are not as close to each other and so the sky looks quite ordinary. The second and third images of the third row are a lot like the images of the first row because the clouds are not as defined and do not really stand out in the midst of all the buildings.

The buildings in all the images are sky scrapers except for the buildings on the second and third image of the second row are not as tall as the other buildings. The sky scrapers represent a developed city and obviously play the part as buildings in a skyline.

The land in these images are quite effective as they are misty  and unclear showing the busy city life. This allows a viewer to picture the land how they would personally imagine it to look like. It is important for an audience to be able to looks at an image and sometimes decide what they want an image to look like or what an image means to them.

Finally, this is inspirational because even though there are very few colours used, a story could still be brought across to the readers. The colours grey, white and black used in the same image makes a piece look old and quite sad. The emotions of all the images were dark, miserable and hopeless. These images inspire me to focus on the detail and even just the positions of the things I draw because they effect the way a piece is viewed.

The first image is of a skyline including skyscrapers and clouds again. The clouds look as if they are too low in the sky and, again, overtaking the city- covering it in most and smoke. The sky is basically made of one big collision of clouds. The clouds demean the skyscrapers and look powerful because they are in front, behind and next to the buildings. Again, all the images are black, grey and white, look old and definitely misty.

The second image is mainly based arround trees and an almost cloudless sky. The trees in the image stand out due to the lack of the detail in the sky and the simplicity of the sky. The sky is uninteresting because it is typical and slightly boring. Beneath the trees, there is grass. Surprisingly, this image does not look too negative; even though the colours are dark, the things in the image still managed to change he whole mood of the piece. Trees always symbolise life, hope and peace and even without bright colours the image still managed to look positive but white old.

The third image consists of too many clouds grouped together and low in the sky 'overtaking the city'. To prove the perculiarity of how low the skies are in the sky, the top half of the sky is empty and clear and buildings are hidden amongst the clouds. This relates to the emotions fear and anger.

The fourth image is not too interesting as the image is quite a blurr because of all the clouds involved in the sky. Personally, I cannot see any buildings and can only see a river and clouds. The image is too simple; I learnt that if a piece is too simple viewers will not be interested in a piece (vice versa).

The fifth image is again of buildings and clouds. The buildings are quite dark in colour and so the sky brings some light into the image. The clouds are not too defined and the right side of the sky is darker than the left side. Again, the building are not too clear and look as if they are caught up in some fog but the buildings almost become a shadow and shapes surrounded by the sky. The contrast in colour infringed me too.

The sixth image is different to all of the other images be sure the clouds have actually fully overtaken buildings and so they can barely be seen unless you look closely at the image. The sky does not have obvious clouds and the image is quite simple but the emotions created by this piece is simply amazing. It looks like nature is overtaking man made structures and nothing is being done about it. The emotions, again, that you can see are negative but instead, this time, they are strong, obvious and inevitable no matter the circumstances of a viewers imagination.

Finally, in my abstract I would like to create skylines that are not accurate to reality and allow a viewer to imagine whilst still getting the main plot of the piece. These images inspired me to concentrate on how I layout my work and the emotions I want to be created.

This is an artist piece of diagonally cut wood positioned randomly to form this piece. Of course there is no actual colour used in this piece but each small piece of wood reminded me of buildings and how they all differ in size and shape. The piece looks very busy and caught the attention of many viewers because it is 3D and viewed differently by different viewers.

This piece consists of the materials, cardboard and a permanent marker pen. The piece is very detailed and is of workers and their leader. There is a lady wrapped in a cloth with different messages on it that are supposed to appeal her workers and encourage them to work- propoganda. This image caught my intention because of the amount of detail included and the dissimilar shapes. Even the outline of the piece itself was in an interesting shape. Furthermore, although this art work is not related to skylines it inspired me. This is because instead of creating random emotions that a viewer is supposed to relate to, the image creates a clear story. The amount of detail used was so amazing that stories could be created inside of other stories. In my opinion, this piece contradicts the idea that too much detail draws the viewers' attention away. On the other hand, the piece was so detailed that some shapes are lost in others and therefore unrecognised. This piece inspires me to focus on shapes and think about the story I want to create instead of just the emotions. Also, this relates to mental imagery because many different shapes are being put together to create a story that could be biased (as a memory is personal and tends to be biased).

These posters are all of some point in history. All these posters inspired me to create a story within my abstract that is personal to me or other people ( an important part of history). However, I do not want any of my pieces to have only just one story behind it but I want it to be interpreted in many different ways.

These are devastating pictures of an undeveloped society facing problems. In the pictures there is rubble, a man, cars, trees and houses. The images are again in black and white. These images definitely intrigued me.

The images are misty and dark with a plain sky and an atmosphere that looks congested with smoke and unsafe for people to live. Houses and trees have been damaged, a man is dead and the rubble is pulling up. There is so much dust and mud and the land is actually focused now and not hidden amongst clouds, fog or buildings. Furthermore, this piece was amazing because I never thought that even the simplest of this would create such strong emotions or such a moving image which, creates a story again. The picture of rubble alone could make me feel as if I was in the scene. On the other hand, this piece makes me endeavour for my work to be realistic and not just fantasised. When a piece is just too unrealistic a whole piece can become fake to viewers. Art pieces are supposed to relate to people viewing a piece so the piece has to be realistic. This also incourages me look at unfinished buildings or damaged buildings and not just perfect buildings- a perfect building would not relate to a memory as memories do not tend to be as exact as the dark moment.

These are all images of the the top half of the back of a girl's head. The girl has short, black hair and is wearing a white top. The background of the image is black and there are four consecutive images of this.

The piece is titled 'twenty questions' and asks viewers if the girl is 'as pretty as a picture, or clear as crystal, or pure as a lily, or black as coal or sharp as a razor'.
The questions are quite strange and make the piece seem very gothic because of the dark colours and strange questions. Furthermore, the questions start of quite normal and positive but then goes on to being very dark and negative. This images are significant because it relates to memories because of  confusion involved. This could be an image that is being forgotten so consequently the person asks themselves questions about the girl repeatedly. The significance of the repeated image in round frames could tell the viewer that the image is either haunting someone or is really important to them. The picture inspire me to think about my use of colour (in this instance,in my opinion, the black and white theme gives the sense of a forgotten image as the colours cannot be remembered). Also, I will think about questions I want viewers to ask when they see my piece.

These images are a lot like the previous image. This time there is a young lady and you can only see her body from her neck to her hips. The woman is wearing a white best top and crossing her arms across her stomach. Also, the background of the image are white. There are five consecutive images and above and below the artist included a few words.

Above the images, the working week days are listed - from Monday to Friday. Beneath the images there are words all beginning with the three letters 'mis'. The image then basically lists all the negative occurrences in that particular woman's life. This includes: misinformation, misdentify, misdiagnose, misfunction, mistranscribe, misremember, misgauge, misconstrue. Some of these words do not make sense but I believe the artist is overemphasizing that the problems were happening to a lady. These images do not connote negativity because the main door of the images is white which is obviously a positive as white represents peace. This emotion is juxtaposed by the words beneath the images which could say that although you may think a woman looks peaceful they have different flaws. The days of the week suggest that the woman may be prone to those emotions at work because of all the stress. This piece is inspirational because it basically says not to judge a book by it's cover. This inspires me to have different layers in my piece that have different emotions- basically different contrasting emotions.

This piece is really interesting because of all the different colours used. Although the piece is of people being enforced by creatures. The colour creates a happy mood that makes me think of traditional cultures. The bright colours can draw the attention of many people. The colours red, orange and yellow stand out so that you can see that people are getting eaten as they are bright colours that captivate a lot of attention whilst red is the sign of danger. This piece lacks a lot of detail but has a lot of quantity instead making the readers view the piece more closely and look at what is happening in the piece. This seems gothic because blood, danger and supernatural creatures are involved. This is not something I would want to include in my piece as I do not want my piece to be unrealistic or frightening. What does inspire me in this piece is the use of mainly warm colours that connotes happiness and warmth.

This picture is of quite a few images including a group of people wearing similar clothes, buildings and sculptures. The one thing that captivated my attention in all of the pieces was the bright colours. Again, the colours were warm and joyful and so in the piece of a group of people wearing similar clothes, they now look like part of one close community or family- or even a wedding. For example, if all the colours used were cold and dark I would think that something just went wrong and the community was being separated. To improve from previous pieces, I will focus on creating clearer emotions by thinking carefully of the colours I use.

These images are like the previous ones because they include distinct colours that create strong emotions. I am in awe of the use of colour more than anything else. For example, the red image connotes danger and the yellow image connotes joy.

Again, like the other this piece looks peaceful, is a beautiful view flooded with bright colours but then the writing overlaying it says 'the music from the balconies nearby was overlaid by the acts of sporadic violence'. This changed the whole mood of the piece. Although the scene was bright and sunny and music from balconies can be heard the occasional acts of violence ruins the scene. This piece is joyful as the clouds are pink, and although the writing on top of it states otherwise, there is no violence or balconies to be seen- just fields. Consequently, the different ideas would question a viewer which, like I said previously, is what I want to do. Whilst questioning the viewer, I will also make sure that the viewer does not get too confused or else my art piece would be pointless and not create any real emotions.

I really like this piece because it shows a town and the roles that people play in one small image. There is a soldier, children, a man reading a magazine, a couple sitting on a bench, a car, a building, a lady mourning on a coffin and much more. The piece displays lots of different people simply minding their own businesses but in the same image. So basically, everyone should not belong in the overall situation.

I really liked this piece but the reason for this was not because of the many colours used. In a way this image taught me that if many different colours are used, the colours do not really represent anything anymore. Consequently, I focused on the things within this piece. This piece inspired me because all the characters in the piece built up a town which could be understood simply by looking at the amazing art piece. The town is constantly intimidated by soldiers and propoganda and new changes are being made; also, the different ranks in society can be seen. My attention was captivated by the unfinished building in the piece because it clearly relates to what I have been drawing. The perculiarity of the town brought my attention as instead of bricks being raised, coffins were being moved around. This piece inspires me to think about what context the buildings in my skylines are being placed in and what effective mood or story this can create for viewers. Also, this piece further incourages me to create stories within my piece that do not necessarily have to be realistic. Colours are not always the only factor that creates strong emotions in a piece. Lastly, I was also intrigued with the smoke near the back of the piece because of the texture of the smoke. The different tones were perfect in creating realistic smoke and I would need to use a similar technique like this when creating my abstract.

This piece is really interesting because of the shapes used. I figured that shapes are crucial and are needed in all art pieces because they are the basis of where colour or how colour will be added unto a piece.

This piece is of material with blurred out shapes printed on it. The piece consists of the colours light blue and dark blue. The cold colours are really effective and do not require any detailed shapes or objects to create the mood of this piece. Furthermore, this reminds me of water because the objects are blurred out and the dark blue represents water blocking out your view. This piece is all blue and so tells me that many different colours are not the basis of an effective piece but instead, the representation of one colour is. I will concentrate on the emotions colours bring instead of wether they actually are the right colours that fit an image ( so basically the colours do not necessarily have to be realistic).

This piece is of a person with a creature for a head. I was interested by this because it is unique and features irregular shapes that help build up the beautiful piece.

The piece is of someone in a jumper with a long neck and a creature's face. I really liked this piece because the techniques the artist used were obvious and important to help understand the piece. The writer makes obvious marks with the material he uses for the jumper which effectively makes the jumper look sketched, unrealistic and fake. The light colours also help to confirm this. Also, the kneck of the character in the image is made to look absolutely realistic because of the different tones used. The face is made up of many different shapes that the face even looks as if many different images were placed together in order to create it.

This piece intrigued me because it reminded me of mental imagery. To be more precise, he piece reminded me of a child's mind and how they might picture something. It tells me that with mental imagery, most of the time, images are not exact and sometimes reality is mixed with imagination. The clothes of this character look as if they were coloured in crayon whilst the kneck looks realistic. The face of the character could represent the character as being horrible and scary and so may not be the actual face of the character. Finally, this piece inspires me to think about the small details in my abstract and the different materials I use

Again, this piece intrigued me because of the different shapes that when put together can be interpreted to be different things.

These pieces drew my attention because of size. These pieces are all of men from different cultures or backgrounds that are created using different colours and sizes. The first man was drawn in blue and looks quite old because of the details on his face. Furthermore, this consists of a close-up of his face. The second man looks like a soldier, is focused and drawn in brown. The last man is drawn in black and has a serious expression.

I liked all of these pieces becaused that differed in size. These three Pieces taught me to work on size and how it affects the mood of a piece. For example, the man in the middle looks quite isolated because he is drawn quite small and distant. Futhermore, colour was quite crucial in this piece. For example, because the third man was drawn in black, he looked quite hostile. This is because he is not surrounded by any bright colours and is shown wearing black. I will therefore, work on how one colour can create a fixed emotion.

These images are again of people and the pieces are in different sizes and colours.

I am interested in this piece because of the detail. I will endeavour to add a lot of detail into my skylines.

This piece intrigued me because of its massive size, colours and shapes. This piece almost summarises all the pieces above and again relates to all the factors I will try and include in my abstract pieces.

This picture is of a skyline and includes a street, buildings and the sky. The sky is almost cloudless and the sidewalks are crammed with people.

I really like this piece because of the way the skyscraper towers above everything below it. Furthermore, the bright sky lets out happy bright emotions in the midst of many different buildings.
