Combining Artists Techniques To Find My Own Technique

---Material and Medium: blue acrylic, water, blue felt tip, crafting knife, different cover sizes, glue stick

I added a lot of water unto the page and blue paint and then carefully moved the acrylic around trying not to create a brush mark. This was to connote the clouds. I then used a different sized circle outline to draw another circle and then used a crafting knife to cut through it. After this, I stuck the cut out picture unto the blue abstract. I thought this was really interesting as you could not see any empty space. The colour that I used for the abstract was vibrant and mixed well with the sky. What was really intriguing in this piece is the fact that you do not know where to look at; whether to look at the picture or the abstract. When doing this piece I made it obvious that parts of the picture was missing which I thought went well as it is proved my point about mental imagery. I liked the whole idea about combining the two artist’s style together because it made the piece baroque in my opinion. To improve this, I could have added some blue on the pictures to make it look as if the blue is removing the memory from your mind. What I would do differently is change the shape of the picture to a rectangle instead of a circle to see the difference. I was also thinking of using cardboard to make the image pop out and make the buildings seem lively.

For my second experiment, I started adding abstract onto the page but this time it came out even darker and so I added some white to create the sky. The hardest part in creating this piece was spreading less blue across the page which was out of my control since I poured the water on the page first making the paint travel across the paint. After this, I stuck the cut out image which was in the shape of a rectangle and placed it unto the abstract. I also added cardboard beneath to make the cut image stand out whilst putting the middle and the outside image flat unto the abstract. I thought this was unsuccessful mostly because of the abstract as it looks like a river instead of a sky. Also, the abstract looks too simple with not much detail. I think the images cut were cut out too small and should have been cut a little bigger so that the abstract would look less plain. Instead of painting a few clouds I could have painted some more and see the outcome. Using the cardboard at the back of the picture was successful as it plays with the viewers mind making them wonder about which rectangle is coming out of the page. To change this, I would do exactly what I did not like from this piece and try and change it to how it is supposed to look like- learning from my mistakes.

The Third experiment I thought went well because I used a lighter blue and added more clouds. In my opinion, this still looks like a river instead of a sky, so for my next experiment I will try adding more different shades on the clouds. However, this experiment looks more like a sky than the last one. Following Michael Tompsett’s style, I added ink to make the abstract look more expressive. I tripled the piece of cardboard that I had placed under the image so that it came out of the page more. I thought this was successful because of how the image is part of the abstract and a huge piece of the picture is taken out connecting to “mental imagery.” I did the same thing for my fourth experiment but lost a little control in making the abstract less heavy and dark. This time instead of making the buildings and the picture pop out of the page I made some parts stick flat unto the page which again played with the viewers mind.

Whilst doing this experiment, I noticed that there was a smaller abstract piece within the piece.  I tried re-creating this little abstract and was excited when re-creating this as I found my new technique. The technique was to dab my paintbrush with paint onto a piece of paper. This technique really makes the clouds look realistic but at the same time abstract relating to Michael tompsett’s style of abstract. I wanted to create a new sketchbook focusing on this new technique I found so I tried refining it as I think this would work well for my final piece.
